Ford's 2.5-liter, aluminum-block-and-head, Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder internal combustion engine,

which generates 163 horsepower and 155 pounds-feet of torque, is the foundation of the Escape's hybrid powertrain.

With the addition of an 88kWh electric motor, the Blue Oval team was able to increase the powertrain's output to 192 horsepower.

This power is then transferred through an electronically controlled

continuously variable automatic gearbox (CVT) and into a full-time all-wheel drive (AWD) system.

According to tests conducted by Motor Trend magazine, this technique results in a small SUV that can reach 60 miles per hour from rest in 8.1 seconds.
